Research

The emphasis of the hematology clinic, where I see the majority of outpatients, is on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the red blood cells as well as platelet and coagulation abnormalities. Although initially organized as a consultative clinic, providing hematologic diagnosis and management recommendations to other healthcare providers, many patients with hematologic diseases receive long-term care in this setting. In the 1993-94 academic year there were over 400 clinic visits including approximately 130 new patients. The clinic has recently expanded to three one-half day clinics to accommodate an increase in patient visits.

There are several areas of clinical research that I am pursuing. In collaboration with members of the Division of Laboratory Medicine, I plan to develop alternative assays to aid in the management of anticoagulant dosing for patients with thromboembolic disease.

The area in which we provide the most long-term care is the integrated management of patients with sickle cell disease and related hemoglobinopathies. I am in the process of evaluating several aspects of their care such as dental disease and the use of indwelling venous catheters.

I also am developing a library to store plasma and DNA samples from patients with hematologic diseases. This will allow for the potential identification of specific mutations and may provide insight in the long run into new diagnostic assays.
