Research

My general interests are in GI and GU malignancies. Specifically, I have focused on prostate and pancreatic cancers. In prostate cancer, I have been looking at alternative hormonal therapies, and also developing chemotherapy for hormone refractory disease. We have successfully conducted a trial showing the utility of Mitoxantrone and Taxotere in treating this cancer. In addition, we have looked at multiple other newer compounds, including monoclonal antibodies, viral and other biological therapies. For pancreatic malignancies, we have helped to establish the activity of Gemcitabine in this cancer, and are looking at ways to increase its activity by coming up with a unique combination of Gemcitabine and radiation therapy. We are also running one of the few clinical trials in the country for gallbladder and cholangiocarcinomas, and have thereby become a national referral center for these cancers. Finally, with our colleagues in radation oncology, we have established the utility of combined radiation therapy and chemotherapy in downstaging rectal cancers safely and effectively.
