| Professional activities | I have been chief of the Hematology Division at UTHSCSA for 15 years. My research activities presently include investigating the role of cellular iron in regulating gene expression (especially transcription) in mammalian cells. I also am in charge of the lymphoid leukemia biology program of the Southwest Oncology Group so work as well in the area of leukemia biology. My other academic activities are pretty equally balanced among teaching, patient care, and administration. At the national level I have served on both VA and NIH study sections, advisory groups, and site visit teams, and on editorial boards. Our Hematology Division consists of 12 faculty (8 MDs, 2 MD/PhDs, and 2 PhDs) who together account for over $2M in annual extramural direct support research dollars. Clinically we are a classical hematology division that includes a strong bone marrow/stem cell transplant program. In collaboration with our Division of medical Oncology we have a joint fellowship program which is supported in part by NIH T32 and K12 grant awards. |
